Hey, neighbour!
The past few months have been incredibly busy with a largely brand council that is unified together around solving some of the biggest challenges that the City needs to face. In my conversations with neighbours and interviews with the media I have been consistently clear: the buck stops with this council, and for Ward 4 it stops with me.
Top of mind for me is the infrastructure improvements that must be taken care of during this council term. There are major projects are underway already like the Bearspaw Feeder Main twinning and the new water main to north Calgary. But I am also laser‑focused on improving our streets—something I heard repeatedly during the campaign—which is why I am asking you to vote this week on where new flashing pedestrian lights should be installed (see below).
But the other work that isn't always as talked about is the governance improvements needed to make changes to how the city operates for Calgarians. This week in executive committee we will be making some big decisions on the future of the city and The City. It's likely we won't be as unified on some of these motions as we are on the water main repair, but our healthy debate is a part of arriving at change for the neighbours of Ward 4 and for all Calgarians.

The time has come to select a pair of new locations for pedestrian crossing flashing lights. The Ward 4 team has collected suggested locations, checked the data to see where traffic collisions are occurring in communities, and put together a list of five top places where safety can be immediately improved. But Cllr. Kelly needs your help in selecting where there first two flashing lights will be installed.

Next week's Executive Committee meeting on Feb. 3 will be the major focus of councillors' time early next week. Cllr. Kelly will be putting forward a motion that places a cooling off period for recent City of Calgary staff to serve on boards and committees for one year, which is common condition for people working in public service for other orders of government.
Other motions that will be considered as part of the committee are extending the length of time Calgary Transit users can use transfers, making changes to the City of Calgary's sunshine list, reviewing the Downtown Free Fare Zone for transit, looking to create new funding mechanisms for infrastructure in the city, and a shoplifting bylaw to reduce strain on Calgary Police Service resources. The committee is also being asked to support a postponed motion that would direct the Province of Alberta to close the Sheldon M. Chumir supervised consumption site.
Executive Committee will also receive a verbal report on the performance evaluation of our Chief Administration Officer, which will be held confidential and provided to members of council only due in compliance with the legal restrictions imposed by the province's Access to Information Act.

City of Calgary Summer Student Jobs
