Hey, neighbour!
Last weekend, my team and I had the chance to attend the Beddington Heights Winter Carnival, where we had the opportunity to meet with dozens of neighbours. This was an absolute blast for us, as we got to hand out candy, provide information on city services, and take your feedback back to the Ward 4 office. We've already been working on those suggestions, to make Beddington and some of the surrounding communities even better.
The best part of the event was seeing all of the neighbours connect with one another. Whether it was old friends or friends for the first time, I was glad to see that the community embraced the spirit of Family Day. I strongly believe that neighbours having conversations with neighbours is the best way to create strong and resilient communities.
Oh, and we got to eat some smores around the carnival's fire pit to continue some of those conversations.
Over this coming weekend, I will be attending even more community events, many of them as part of the 2026 Lunar Near Year celebrations. To the many Chinese and Asian members of Ward 4 celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse, Kung Hei Fat Choi! And to everyone else who will be enjoying a local community celebration in their neighbourhood, I look forward to connecting with you soon.

On March 9, there will be a planned shut down of Bearspaw South Feeder Main so that essential reinforcement work can take place on six segments of pipe. As a result there will be four weeks of restrictions on outdoor water use.

Over the past week, in addition to the Beddington Heights Community Association event mentioned above, Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team attended the Chinatown Business Improvement Area Lunar New Year Celebration. met with Calgary-Beddington MLA Amanda Chapman and Calgary-Klein MLA Lizette Tejada to discuss shared issues in Ward 4.
Cllr. Kelly met with Mayor Farkas' new chief of staff regarding shared priorities, as well as City administration from the Parks business unit to discuss urban tree canopy improvements and lifecycle maintenance for playgrounds in Ward 4, and the Recreation business unit to talk about future improvements to Ward 4 arenas and aquatics centres as part of the GamePlan strategy. He also took a site tour of the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant and Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant along with his city council colleagues.

On Feb. 24, Council will be addressing a packed agenda during a Regular Meeting of Council. That agenda includes hearing from the City Auditor's Office, receiving the 2025 year-end corporate risk report, reviewing a grant application by the Forest Improvement Association of Alberta, discussing a potential naming for a Sunnyside park, and reviewing the performance evaluation for the City's CAO.
Council will also receive a number of reports from previous committees for discussion, including the funding risk report produced as a result of the potential repeal of citywide rezoning at the end of March.
Cllr. Kelly's motion to update governance for the City will also be heard for debate this week, which introduces a one-year cool off period for City of Calgary employees to serve on boards, commissions, and committees. Other notices of motion up for debate include lengthening the transfer window for Calgary Transit riders, reviewing the Downtown Free Fare Zone, creating a report on new funding models for infrastructure in the City, and introducing a $100‑or‑less shoplifting bylaw.
The meeting date has been set for the Public Hearing of Council to hear from Calgarians their thoughts on the planned repeal of citywide rezoning. Under the Municipal Governance Act (MGA) every land use change that occurs in Calgary requires that City Council hears from members of the public and considers their input before a vote is cast.

The City of Calgary and Calgary Transit are asking neighbours from Ward 4 to submit their thoughts on whether the Green Line should be elevated or not, and on the future of the Downtown Free Fare Zone. Submit your comments to engage.calgary.ca for the Green Line and at Calgary Transit's Downtown Free Fare Zone website for that survey.
