Hey, neighbour!
This March is Community Association Awareness Month, which celebrates the 160 community associations that are the foundation of Calgary’s communities. I want to give a special shout‑out to each of the 13 community associations in Ward 4, all of which do great work to support their communities and are often one of the main reasons people say their neighbourhood is the best in Calgary.
From Beddington to Brentwood, and every community in between, the dedicated volunteers of these associations partner with the City on community planning, put in countless hours to organize community events, and are often the first people neighbours turn to when they see fellow community members in need of help.
Over the past few months since being elected, myself and the Ward 4 team have been attending community association town halls, board meetings, and community events. Through my Partnership Lead, Rukhsaar Daya—who has been doing amazing work to connect community associations with the Ward 4 office—I have been able to champion these associations within the City of Calgary and in council chambers.
For me, community associations are essential to Calgarians. That’s why I will be working throughout this four‑year budget to find ways to ensure community associations are properly funded and can continue to provide essential services to our neighbours.

On March 9, there will be a planned shut down of Bearspaw South Feeder Main so that essential reinforcement work can take place on six segments of pipe. As a result there will be four weeks of restrictions on outdoor water use.

Over the past week, Ward 4 Partnership Lead Rukhsaar Daya engaged with the Brentwood and Triwood community associations on what reimagined zoning would look like for their communities, ahead of the upcoming public hearings on Citywide Rezoning. The Ward 4 team also took in a briefing on Local Area Plans from City administration.
Improving public safety was a focus this week with the entire Ward 4 team, including Cllr. Kelly, meeting with the Calgary Police Service about their CPS liaison program and attending the Calgary Policing Summit. The Ward 4 team also met with Calgary Transit to do a service review and advocate for transit access for Ward 4 neighbours, and with the Calgary Firefighters Association to better support the needs of firefighters.
Cllr. Kelly met with his federal counterpart, MP Corey Hogan, to discuss shared issues between Ward 4 and the Calgary Confederation riding. He also met with Tourism Calgary to discuss key initiatives to grow Calgary's visitor economy that will benefit the neighbours of Ward 4.
This week Cllr. Kelly was featured in the Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun, and syndicated outlets for his Notice of Motion to create an annual municipal-provincial fiscal gap report. He was also quoted talking about the need for water infrastructure improvements and fiscal pressures related to those needs by CityNews.

On Tuesday, March 10, council will be attending the fifth and final Strategic Meeting of Council to finalize the priorities of council members ahead of the four-year budget.
On Wednesday, March 11, The Infrastructure and Planning Committee will be meeting on topics in Ward 2, 7, 9, and 13. Other topics include a progress report in the City of Calgary's 10-year Capital Infrastructure Plan, levels of service for park maintenance, and the accelerated program to replace poplar trees that have damaged sidewalks. The committee will also receive a report on the reserve bid prices for properties being auctioned off as part of the annual Real Estate Public Auction as part of the City's process to recover funds owed from taxes in arrears.
On Thursday, March 12, Calgary Planning Commission members will meet to discuss planning amendments in Ward 9, and land use amendments in Ward 7 and 14. There are no items for Ward 4 during this meeting.
The meeting date has been set for the Public Hearing of Council to hear from Calgarians their thoughts on the planned repeal of citywide rezoning. Under the Municipal Governance Act (MGA) every land use change that occurs in Calgary requires that City Council hears from members of the public and considers their input before a vote is cast.

Neighbourhood Planning Workshop for North Haven and Thorncliffe-Greenview
On Saturday, March 7, the North Haven and Thorncliffe-Greenview Community associations will be holding a joint two-hour mapping workshop to collaborate with University of Calgary students on future design ideas for these communities.
