Hey, neighbour!
This week has left me reflecting on the importance of community resilience. On Monday, a shocking shooting left one person dead and another person fighting for their life outside of the North Hill Co-op. The brazenness of the crime shook me, as it shook many of our neighbours. But while it is easy to ruminate on the shooting, what I have been focused on is what comes next to support the search for justice and to maintain the resiliency of our impacted neighbours.
This week I attended the Calgary Interfaith Council breakfast, taking in the wise words of Senator Ron Ghitter as he openly spoke about the strengths of our society and what we must do to keep those bonds strong. Standing up for human rights in an age where that can be seen as an uncomfortable or unpopular act is not only the right thing to do, but also something we must do both loudly and quietly as the circumstance calls.
Going back to Co-op the day after was, for me at least, a quiet testament to standing up for what I believe in. I chose not to let those who would use violence to tear apart a community to find purchase next to our homes, or to let the fear they bring cause us to lose our community spirit. It is only us a community that gets to define how we feel about ourselves.

🚸Neighbourhood safety is getting an improvement in Huntington Hills, with the installation of new pedestrian crosswalk flashing lights at the intersection of Hunterview Drive NW and Huntercrest Road NW. This intersection was a frequently requested location for safety improvements by neighbours, and Cllr. Kelly has been working with the City's mobility business unit to address their concerns.
The flashing lights will be activated on Tuesday, May 19.

On Monday, Cllr. Kelly provided remarks on behalf of Calgary City Council at Calgary Economic Development's annual Uplook Assembly. He met with the Homespace Society and the Calgary Homeless Foundation to continue his work to support vulnerable Calgarians in need of housing and improve safety. Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team met with the Ismali Council for the Prairies about working together to increase community volunteerism for the benefit of Ward 4. In the evening, he took a site tour of the Scotia Place construction and attended a town hall on a development application in Brentwood.
On Thursday, Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team attended the Calgary Interfaith Council annual breakfast. That event was followed up with a meeting regarding the placement of an Enmax transmission line in Ward 4. During the day he had multiple in-person meetings with neighbours on a variety of issues related to the City of Calgary. During the evening, he attended the Wing Kei Care Centres 2026 Report to the Community.
Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team will be taking the long weekend off to spend time with their families and friends, and will be returning to the office on Tuesday, May 19.
Cllr. Kelly was featured by the Calgary Herald about his Fire Ops 101 training last week.
Cllr. Kelly's response to Monday's shooting at the North Hill Co-op was covered by all of the daily news outlets in Calgary, including the 660 News, CBC News and CBC Radio, the Calgary Herald, CTV, Global Calgary, LiveWire Calgary, and the Western Standard.
His speech at Uplook was quoted by Calgary Economic Development in their newsletter on the event.

On Thursday, May 21, the Community Development Committee will be meeting to receive and discuss the 2025 Civic Partner Annual Report. That report contains the annual reports from organizations like Tourism Calgary, Heritage Park, and the Calgary Public Library among others.
Council members will be meeting on the afternoon of Thursday, May 21, for a Regular Meeting of Council to receive the 2025 reports from council committees, boards, and commissions.
