Hey, neighbour! One of my favourite days on Calgary's calendar is fast approaching, Neighbour Day. Even though this day was started in 2014 after the flood that devastated our city in 2013, it has grown into something far larger than just a day about that event. It has become an opportunity to celebrate what makes our city special and unique: that can-do attitude that brings neighbours together to help one another and create lasting friendships. What I especially appreciate about Neighbour Day is the volunteers who make hundreds of events across the city possible. There is nothing more in the spirit of the Calgarians who rolled up their sleeves to help one another than to see that same commitment carried forward year after year, not only restoring what was lost, but building stronger communities. During the past few weeks, I have prioritized attending volunteer recognition events at Ward 4 community associations, and I have also had the opportunity to volunteer myself at a number of events, from casinos to community cleanups. I feel it is important to recognize the hard work that these individuals have done to support their communities. Whether it’s tending to rinks in the winter, helping to shovel sidewalks as snow angels, running events and programmes at their local hall, or even volunteering to do a shift during a fundraiser, their often-unsung work quietly makes their communities the ones that neighbours want to live in. It was a very busy week at City Hall with committee meetings every day of the week, but Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team still found time to attend community and civic partner meetings.
On Monday, Cllr. Kelly attended a council information session on the City's sport infrastructure strategy, which is all about ensuring we have sport facilities that allow us to train local athletes and attract national and international competitions. That meeting was followed by a meeting with the United Way of Calgary and Area regarding the Planet Youth program to support young people in Calgary and to learn about the program's impact in Thorncliffe and Huntington Hills. On Wednesday, Cllr. Kelly celebrated the career of retiring COO Stuart Dalgleish, after 37 years of public service at the City of Calgary. The entire Ward 4 team wishes Stuart well and thanks him for his dedication to neighbours.
On Thursday, Cllr. Kelly met with the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation on the Dalhousie Transit Oriented Community project.
On Friday, Cllr. Kelly met with senior leadership of the Calgary Police Service including Chief McLellan ahead of the service's budget requests for the upcoming City of Calgary four-year budget and service plans. Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team attended the FIFA World Cup launch party at Eau Claire Plaza to cheer on Team Canada along minor soccer groups from Ward 4 and across Calgary. In the evening, Cllr. Kelly is slated to speak at a Common Sense Calgary Pints and Politics event to discuss his vision for Calgary.
Over the weekend Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team are set to attend the Edgemont Community Association Nordic Rodeo and Stampede Breakfast, and volunteer at the the Dalhousie Community Cleanup.
CBC Calgary quoted Cllr. Kelly, on his desire to see more detailed plans from City Administration about where improvements will be added to make roads safer in Ward 4.
Cllr. Kelly was quoted by CityNews about his desire to see the Green Line alignment through downtown Calgary reflect an alignment that would connect to a north leg of the light rail transit.
He was also quoted by CBC Calgary regarding the need to further fund municipal infrastructure upgrades, and by LiveWire Calgary, the Calgary Herald, Global News, and Red FM regarding the municipal-provincial gap report that was delivered as a result of Cllr. Kelly's notice of motion earlier this year.

On Tuesday, June 16, Calgary City Council will be meeting for a Strategic Meeting of Council to discuss The Calgary Plan. This plan is designed to provide direction as the city grows into a community of two million neighbours, and combines the 2009 Municipal Development Plan and the Calgary Transportation Plan into a single framework. Importantly, it sets policies for land use, development, transportation and the provision of municipal services and facilities.
On Thursday, June 18, the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee will be meeting to receive an update from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Alberta Municipalities, the City of Calgary-City of Chestermere Intergovernmental Committee, City of Calgary-Foothills County Intergovernmental Committee, and the Regional Table. Members will also be updated on the status of annexation of land from Foothills County, and a new proposed framework for intermunicipal collaboration. The committee will also discuss their recommendations for asks from the City of Calgary to the federal government for the 2026 Federal Budget
