Hey, neighbour! Councillors, during their time in office, wear many different hats: governors of the City of Calgary, local community champions, advocates for the needs of neighbours, and ambassadors for the city as a whole. This past week, I added a pair of extra hats to my duties with roles as Deputy Mayor for the City of Calgary and the Chair of Calgary Salutes. At events across the city, I have been advocating for all Calgarians as Deputy Mayor. Whether it's been meeting with federal or provincial ministers like Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture or at an event hosted by Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen, I've made our city's priorities the priorities of these orders of government. And I can share that the response has been positive and collaborative, with major investments into Calgary being announced during the Stampede and more expected in the months ahead. As the Chair of Calgary Salutes, I've also had the distinct privilege to spend time with the command team of HMCS Calgary and members of HMCS Tecumseh and 41 Canadian Brigade Group. I've invited them to Stampede events and helped to further connect the men and women at the frontlines of our nation's defence with everyday Calgarians. In a time when you can't turn on the news or open a newspaper without seeing the dangers of geopolitics, I believe it has become even more essential to recognize the unique connection Calgary has to the Canadian Armed Forces. But I also want to share what has truly energized me to attend events from the break of dawn to late into the evening: the conversations with the neighbours of Ward 4. I've made it a priority to attend every Stampede breakfast and BBQ held by our community associations. I truly believe that visiting neighbours and making new friends is what the Stampede spirit is all about. And even though this past week has been about sharing in the fun, it's also been about hearing directly from neighbours about the issues they face and how my team and I can solve those issues on your behalf. Fixing streetlights and getting roads reopened might not make the headlines, but I've considered these to be even more important to me as your Ward 4 councillor than my roles as Deputy Mayor and Chair of Calgary Salutes this past week. With just two days of the Calgary Stampede left, I can't wait to have more conversations with neighbours and hopefully get a chance to see you at a Stampede breakfast or BBQ this weekend. - Councillor DJ Kelly |

🐐 The goat grazing program is set to return later in July to Nose Hill Park. The targeted grazing has been operating for several years at the park in an effort to control invasive species and restore the natural ecosystem of Nose Hill. Over the past week Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team have attended dozens of Stampede events. Some highlights from the past week are the Triwood Stampede Breakfast, the Devin Dreeshen Stampede BBQ, Premier's Stampede Breakfast, Calgary Chamber of Commerce Stampede Party, Military Family Resource Centre Stampede Breakfast, Northland Mall Stampede Breakfast, a visit to the DH Ranch, Rosedale Hospice Stampede BBQ, Nonprofit Chamber Stampede Boots and Baskets, and Highland Park Stampede BBQ. Cllr. Kelly will be attending the Highwood Stampede BBQ on Saturday. |

Cllr. Kelly was quoted by the Calgary Herald about his stance that Alberta should remain as part of Canada, and that third party advertising rules in the province prevents the City from promoting Canadian unity. |

On Monday, July 13, members of the Community Development Committee will be meeting to discuss bylaws related to the Advisory Committee on Accessibility and Access Design subcommittee, Social Wellbeing Advisory Committee, and the Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee. The foxtail barley bylaw amendment and Family and Community Support Services funding recommendations for 2027-2028 will also be discussed. Members will also receive briefings on funding and service levels for Home is Here, and on the Calgary Transit visible security pilot. On Tuesday, July 14, Executive Committee will be meeting to discuss three notices of motion related to a potential lobbyist registry for the City of Calgary, infrastructure and community amenity conditions for Local Area Plans, and updating the seating arrangements in Council Chambers. Members of Executive Committee will also receive updates on the recruitment of Calgary's new CAO, digital delivery of tax notices, multi-year planning and budgeting amendments, and an overview of the Planning and Development Services Department. They will also hear requests for $355,000 for the Meadowlark Park Community Association's Community Gathering Plaza and Bike Park project in Ward 11, $500,000 for the Community Hall Renovation Project for the Mount Pleasant Community Association in Ward 7, and $200,000 for the Willow Ridge Community Association's Greener Grounds Project in Ward 11. On Wednesday, July 15, the Infrastructure and Planning Committee will be meeting to discuss the Glacier Ridge growth application, land use amendments to support schools by removing rules around portable classrooms, an update to the City Center Enterprise Area exemptions, and non-market housing land dispositions. Committee members will also receive briefings on the citywide growth strategy, and an itemized cost breakdown to increase capacity in local area planning. On Thursday, July 16, Audit Committee will be meeting to discuss the 2026 mid-year principal corporate risk report, the 2025 Calgary Police Commission annual report, 2025 Calgary Convention Authority annual report, 2026 audit service plan from the External Auditor, City Auditor's Office Q2 report, and the operational technology governance audit. A number of confidential items will also be discussed related to the upcoming 2026-2030 budget, and reports from the City Auditor and External Auditor. |
