Hey, neighbour.
This week Calgarians came together to remember Parker at a vigil that was held at Municipal Plaza in front of Calgary City Hall. This vigil came about as a result of the incredible community desire to see Parker remembered. I’m so thankful that I was able to help connect community groups, the City, and many many volunteers together for the vigil after I received the ask to help coordinate a larger citywide vigil last week. It was truly a community led effort.
One thousand Calgarians visited the vigil at Municipal Plaza, and to date over 7,500 have watched the vigil livestream that our Ward 4 team produced. I’d like to thank New West Music and Arts Society for performing two songs, including one of Parker’s favourite Disney songs, and to all of the speakers who took the time to share their personal experiences: Police Chief Katie McLellan, Becky Wilmott who founded Find Parker YYC, Kim Presser who is the CEO of Between Friends (and whose summer camps Parker attended), and Mayor Jeromy Farkas. I found the vigil very moving and my hope is it provided some community healing.
Over the remainder of the month myself and my office will be slowing down for the August council recess. We will all be spending time with our family and friends and recharging our batteries before Calgary City Council resumes in September. We'll have someone reviewing emails throughout the month so, please keep reaching out to myself and my team, and we will get a response back to you within a couple days if not sooner.
When I do return to council this September, I'm looking at ways to improve traffic signal timing to decrease pedestrian and vehicle collisions. Addressing pedestrian safety is something that my team and I have been diligently working on street by street since November of last year, and I want to make this back-to-school season the safest for students and parents yet.

 Paving work is ongoing on 53 Street NW and John Laurie Blvd. from Sarcee Trail NW to Shaganappi Trail NW. Paving began on July 18 for 53 Street NW, and on July 23 for John Laurie Blvd.

On Monday and Tuesday, Cllr. Kelly had meetings with community organizers on the vigil for Parker.
On Wednesday, Cllr. Kelly was a guest on CBC's Alberta at Noon and emceed the vigil for Parker at Calgary's Municipal Plaza.
On Thursday, Cllr. Kelly began his council recess vacation.
Over the weekend, Cllr. Kelly is intending to paddle on the government and media boat for the Dragon Boat Festival's Charity Races.
