Hey, neighbour!

Happy Labour Day! And apologies for the delay in sending out this weekly newsletter, which is usually in your inbox on Fridays.ย

Over the past week, I have focused on traffic and pedestrian safety as part of Ward 4 Traffic Safety Week. My team and I have read every one of the hundreds of emails and calls I have received about dangerous intersections and crossings in our communities, and we are working to address them.

To that end, next week I have a notice of motion coming before the Executive Committee that, if passed, would add "Leading Pedestrian Intervals" to signalized intersections across the city. This would give pedestrians between three and seven seconds of lead time to cross. This is important because it decreases collisions between pedestrians and vehicles. This method is so effective and so cost-efficient that the Alberta Motor Association promotes it provincially, and I am pleased that they have written a letter of support for my motion.

Nonetheless, this past week at City Hall was disrupted by a purposeful leak of confidential information by a council member. I believe this info was released in order to stir up concern related to potential 2027 to 2030 tax rates. It's important that you know despite what some folks might try to do with this information, no potential tax rate has been proposed at this time, let alone approved. As part of our budget process, Council has heard from Administration about all the ways we could make improvements against the priorities we set in the spring. For more on this, you can see posts from Cllr. Schmidt, Cllr. Yule and Mayor Farkas.

My goal remains to deliver the smallest possible tax rate that allows us to address our neighbourhoods' infrastructure needs - water, roads, transit, recreation centres, and playgrounds, for example.

I look forward to holding a town hall meeting in October with a focus on the budget and priorities, and to hearing from neighbours before I make any decision on what we fund over the next four years.

In the meantime, please join the Ward 4 team and me this Friday for our monthly Ward 4 On Tap at Citizen Brewing from 3 to 5:30 pm to discuss any hot city topics.

- Councillor D.J. Kelly
