Hey, neighbour.
This week was a somber reminder of the dedication that first responders have to the public. On Tuesday, I attended the annual Fallen Fighterfighter Memorial ceremony added three new names to the wall of the fallen, and recognized the very real sacrifice made by firefighters as a part of their duties. Ronald Forrest, Ronald A. Randen, and Alton G. Mathers all served with distinction for decades to keep Calgarians safe, and my condolences go out to their families and friends.
Friday also marked the 25 year anniversary of 9/11. In 2011, on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 I wrote an essay about my reflections on that day and how it changed me. I want to share a brief passage from that essay this week.
I learned that what we do elsewhere in the world can affect us at home. I learned what happens elsewhere in the world can affect us at home. I learned what happens or what we do elsewhere in the world can have effects on people you never would have intended it to.
I learned more about community and strength of character and actions speaking louder than words in the response of New York City’s citizens and especially their first responders. I had never experienced war, that was something that happened far away. On that day however I saw what someone stepping up, not questioning what needed to be done, instead just knowing, and doing it, looked like. I learned what “finest” and “bravest” actually meant. I learned unwavering dedication to that which needs to be done.
From Major League Baseball, The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live and the individuals involved in each of those groups at the time, I learned what resolve is. I learned moving on doesn’t mean forgetting. I learned what strength actually is and discipline.
I learned I don’t have all the answers and never will. And no one else will either. And that that is okay; it’s not a bad thing. It’s just the way it is; and there is a beauty in that.
Although Calgary is a very different city than the one that invited thousands of passengers to land at our international airport, and in their time of uncertainty be comforted in the hotels and the waiting homes of strangers, I believe that same spirit of generosity remains. What matters is that our ability to put aside anger and show that compassion is a strength even in the face of adversity, and that the unity of community working together to build instead of tear down can always trump division.

On Tuesday, Cllr. Kelly attended a Special Meeting of Council and Executive Committee. During the noon hour Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team attended the Calgary Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony. In the evening, Cllr. Kelly and Ward 4 Partnership Lead Rukhsaar Daya attended the Brentwood Community Association annual general meeting.
On Wednesday, Cllr. Kelly met with a company to discuss water infrastructure work being performed in Ward 4 and a neighbour to discuss development policy and governance.
On Thursday, Cllr. Kelly attended a quarterly shareholder update for ENMAX. The Ward 4 team and Cllr. Kelly met with Truman to discuss the proposed Brentwood Crossing development project. Cllr. Kelly met with the developer of a proposed development in North Haven to share the concerns of neighbours. In the afternoon Cllr. Kelly met with Trico Centre for Family Wellness about recreation opportunities for Calgarians.
On Friday, Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team toured Ward 4 via bike with Bike Calgary. That event was followed by a meeting with the Winston Golf Club to discuss the operations of that golf course on city leased land. In the afternoon, Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team held a community chat at Citizen Brewery. In the evening Cllr. Kelly attended the Chinatown Lantern Festival.
Over the weekend, Cllr. Kelly plans to attend the Greenview Industrial Graffiti Jam, the Dalhousie Community Association Show and Shine, and the 5th annual Hong Kong Culture Day.

📰 Cllr. Kelly was quoted by LiveWire Calgary, CBC Calgary, Global CalgaryWestern Standard, and CTV Calgary regarding his motion to put forward a surface route plan for the Green Line through the Beltline, instead of increasing the cost for the Green Line by $1 billion to keep the same route but raised.
📰 Cllr. Kelly's motion to send the matter of the breach of confidential information by Ward 14 Cllr. Landon Johnson to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for direction was covered by LiveWire Calgary.
📰 The notice of motion to supercharge leading pedestrian intervals put forward by Cllr. Kelly and co-sponsored by Ward 13 Cllr. Andrew Yule and Mayor Jeromy Farkas was covered by the CBC Eyeopener, CityNews Calgary, RedFM, Western Standard, and CTV Calgary.

On Monday, Sept. 14, Calgary City Council will be meeting for a Regular Meeting of Council. They will be receiving Indigenous Focused updates relating to advancing Indigenous relations and commitments to Truth and Reconciliation.
On Tuesday, Sept. 15, Calgary City Council will be holding a Public Hearing Meeting of Council. Members of council will hear matters related to street names in wards 2, 3 and 5, and land use amendments in wards 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13. Council will also receive a report on land use bylaw amendments to support the changing needs of schools, and the Centre City Enterprise Area update.
Council will also receive responses to administrative inquiries during the meeting related to Leading Pedestrian Intervals showing the existing effectiveness of that safety measure for pedestrians, and increased traffic volumes in the community of Vista Heights in relation to shifting traffic patterns due to construction on the 16 Avenue NE bridge.
