Hey, neighbour!
No level of government affects our daily lives more than municipal government. For the past two days several of my council colleagues and I have had a chance to connect with numerous Edmonton and Alberta municipally elected officials, and members of Alberta's government on how to make municipalities more efficient and able to provide better service. This conference has given me and my colleagues the opportunity to advocate on your behalf, and to connect on the best practices being undertaken by municipal governments to best serve their citizens.
One thing that was noteworthy at the conference, is that it is obvious that Calgary is in very good shape. In two of the conference sessions I attended, projects in our city were shown as primary examples of how to do something the right way. We obviously have room to improve, but it was nice to be reminded we're not starting from zero.
Also notable: on Tuesday, my notice of motion to prioritize programming advanced walk lights to signalized intersections across the city was passed City Council 14-1. This change will not only make pedestrians safer, but it is work that can be done within the existing mobility business unit budget without having to add additional dollars. It is also an example of how conversations, like the ones I have been having at this conference, makes a difference. This is work began internally through conversations with my City of Calgary colleagues and grew to include the Alberta Motor Association due to their work to advocate for this type of safety improvement across the province.
I believe conversations like these have been critical for Calgarians, especially heading into the four-year budget deliberations in November. We need to be smart with the funding we have available, and that means working to get the support of the province and other partners on essential safety and infrastructure projects. We also need to work to find efficiencies with other municipalities across Alberta to make sure tax dollars go to the right projects with the right amount of spending to maximize the benefits for Calgarians from these decisions.

💬 Ward 4 neighbours are being asked by the City of Calgary for their feedback on 19 St NW and 20 Ave N mobility improvements. Feedback provided can influence decisions on crossing locations, landscaping and tree mitigation, parking management, design refinements, and access considerations. On Monday, Cllr. Kelly and the Ward 4 team prepared for the Oct. 16 budget town hall. During the lunch break, the Ward 4 team attended a lunch and learn from City administration related to understanding risk management practices at the City of Calgary. In the afternoon Cllr. Kelly met with the Calgary Firefighters Association on the topic the newly approved Fire Services Committee. In the evening he attended a pro-Canada panel discussion, and provided remarks on behalf of The City at an event hosted by the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China.
On Tuesday, Cllr. Kelly attended the Regular Meeting of Council where his notice of motion on leading pedestrian intervals was passed 14-1. During the lunch hour he attended the Calgary Chamber of Commerce fireside chat with Premier Danielle Smith.
On Wednesday through Friday, Cllr. Kelly attended the Alberta Municipalities conference in Edmonton to advocate on behalf of Calgary's municipal interests. During those three days he had numerous meetings with municipal and provincial officials, and attended sessions aimed at improving municipal governance.
On Thursday, the Ward 4 team attended a meeting in Greenview on the topic of the proposed Greenview Junction park.
Over the weekend Cllr. Kelly intends to attend the Cambrian Heights Oktoberfest, and Fall Music in the Park concert in Highland Park. (More details on both are below.)

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Calgary City Council will be holding a Strategic Meeting of Council to discuss the upcoming 2027-2030 budget and service cycles.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, members of Calgary City Council will be attending the City of Calgary Orange Shirt Day Commemorations at The Confluence Historic Site and Parkland.
On Thursday, Oct. 1, members of the Nomination Committee will be meeting to discuss public appointments to boards, commissions, and committees. They will also be discussing public member nominations to the Saddledome Foundation, and appointments to Civic Partners.
On Friday, Oct. 2, members of the Chief Administrative Officer Recruitment Committee will be meeting to continue work on recruiting a new CAO for the City of Calgary.
