Ward 4 Cllr. D.J. Kelly, left, Mayor Jeromy Farkas, and The Nonprofit Chamber CEO Angie Gélinas hold up the historic memorandum of understanding between the Mayor's Office and the Chamber on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2026. (Aryn Toombs / Ward 4)

Hey, neighbour!
Building a city that works for everyone means City Council needs to hear from everyone.
This week I had the opportunity to be present at something truly historic for our city: a first-of-its-kind memorandum of understanding between the Mayor’s Office and The Nonprofit Chamber. You may recall that earlier this year I attended The Nonprofit Chamber’s conference where the work began, and I was very pleased this week to see that this MOU was signed by the mayor this week.
As I said back in April, the way we look at infrastructure as a City needs to be more inclusive than only considering the roads we drive on and the pipes that deliver water to our homes - as vital as those are. We must also consider the community groups that glue our society together. Whether it is the local youth hockey team playing out of the Thorncliffe-Greenview Community Association, or Brentwood Cares providing vital support to community members, these are examples of how social infrastructure goes beyond what we may quickly think of.
Within your Ward 4 office, I have made partnerships a priority since day one because I know that solving the challenges that we face means involving more than just City administration. It means neighbours stepping up, and it means empowering community associations, our business improvement area, our civic partners, and our non-profits. Already this work has meant improved safety for pedestrians in communities, new plans for parks, and a greater variety of activities for neighbours to enjoy.
This is exactly why I need to hear from you as we get ready to set a new budget and business plan for The City of Calgary. With my upcoming budget town hall on Oct. 16, I'm inviting you to pre-send me your budget related question to be answered by myself and our special guest Mayor Jeromy Farkas. You can do that by filling in this Google Forms questionnaire ahead of Thursday, next week, but don't forget to RSVP. I look forward to seeing you there.
- Councillor D.J. Kelly

📰 Cllr. Kelly was quoted by CBC Calgary on his stance that deciding what "appropriate scale" means for housing belongs to neighbours in Calgary, not the provincial government.
📰 Cllr. Kelly told CBC Calgary that council keeps hearing from residents who can't afford a significant tax increase, and that a smaller provincial property tax hike next year would give the City more room to balance addressing local services with affordability.
