Hey, neighbour!

This Monday, Albertans have a choice to make: whether we reject the prospect of separation or descend into even greater uncertainty by choosing to prolong a potential decision to leave Canada. Make no mistake, the future of our nation is at stake. But as I said last night following the Prime Minister’s speech at the Forever Canadian rally in Calgary, you don’t have to take it from me; you can hear it directly from him. Confederation isn't a ledger of gives and takes; it is a promise. It is the foundation for a nation, a set of ideals that binds all Canadians together. In a world that has become more challenging and rife with dangers, where other nations seek to use their position to bully others into submission, we must, now more than ever, stand united at home and with neighbours abroad who share our values and goals for a more prosperous and peaceful future.

I also know that over the past several months, people have asked me why this is a Calgary issue, or even a Ward 4 issue. The answer is simple: Ward 4 is in Alberta, and it is in Canada. Whether Alberta is a part of Canada or not is an issue that affects every Canadian. It transcends the arbitrary lines of our city limits, and even those of our province itself. The division of powers between municipalities, provinces, and the federal government exists to provide efficient service to the people of this nation. Those divisions exist so that each government’s responsibilities to citizens are clearly defined, and so that those same citizens know where to turn to have their issues resolved. There is nothing efficient, responsible, or defined about separation.

Nor is separation a resolution of our grievances. Our province’s frustrations are real, and I share several of them, but separation doesn’t fix any of those issues. It is an abdication of our province’s responsibilities to our fellow Canadians over grievances that are better addressed through dialogue, leadership, and negotiation amongst peers. That is the same work Calgary City Council does every day as a body of peers representing all 14 wards of this city. What separatists are suggesting is akin to a city councillor leaving the meeting when they don’t get their way, rather than coming back to the table and making a stronger case for why their position is the right one for all. Staying at the table is what makes our solutions to issues stronger, our democracy stronger, our nation stronger.

Monday, October 19, is referendum day. Vote as though our country depends on it, because it does.
